DIDJERIDU TERMINOLOGY
BACKPRESSURE= The amount of resistance that builds up inside of the didjeridu when filled with air. Medium to strong backpressure is preferred by most didjeridu players (especially beginners) because it makes circular breathing easier. Low backpressure is a result of a large bored instrument (usually over 2 1⁄2 inches. at mouthpiece). Being difficult to play because more air is needed, they are not recommended for the beginner player. Larger bored didj's have a full-bodied sound and are great for vocalizations.
BELL END= The bottom end of the instrument opposite of the mouthpiece.
BORE= Refers to the size of the opening along the inside of the didjeridu
CIRCULAR BREATHING= The art of being able to constantly play the didjeridu without having to stop for air. How to achieve this is decribed further on the HOW TO PLAY page.
DRONE= The basic sound the didjeridu makes when buzzing your lips without the use of vocalization.
EMBOUCHURE= The position and use of the lips, tongue, and teeth in playing a wind instrument.
HARMONICS= A ringing frequency that sings above the drone . Harmonics are created and manipulated by changing the shape of your lips and tongue while playing.
JAW DROP= To physically drop the position of your jaw while playing. This will cause a drop in pitch to occur.
MOUTHPIECE= Usually constructed using beeswax, the place at the top of the didjeridu that is played with you mouth.
OVERTONES= The trumpet like sound played by forcing the air out harder, through tighter lips. Most didjeridu's have two while some can have as many as five. The first overtone is the easiest to obtain.
PITCH COMMONLY CALLED "KEY"= The note that the didjeridu plays while droning.
TONGUING= Physically using the positioning of your tongue to change harmonics and create rhythms
WALL THICKNESS= A measurment of how thick the wall is on a particular didjeridu. A thin walled instrument will resinate more vibration out the sides of the instrument while a thick walled instrument tends to resinate more sound out the bell end. Too thick of a wall will deaden the sound, where too thin will be fragile. |
