How to Care for Your Didjeridu

Your didjeridu is a wood instrument and is sensitive to extremes, so avoid prolonged full sun exposure, a hot car, or extended periods in a very dry or wet environment. The more care that goes into protecting your didjeridu will result in providing years of trouble free enjoyment. To protect and nourish the wood we applied a non-toxic, oil based finish to both the inside and the outside of your instrument. We recommend you treat your instrument using this oil once every year to the outside of your didj and once every two years to the inside. If the instrument spends it time in the dryer regions we recommend oiling every six months on the outside and every year on the inside.

TO APPLY OIL TO THE OUTSIDE OF YOUR DIDJERIDU:

You will need oil, cotton rags, a bucket, and some water. It is not necessary to take off the mouthpiece if you are only oiling the outside. Take special care to not get any oil on the wax because it will hold on to the smell of the oil.

1.Wipe down the didj with a clean rag to clean the surface of dirt and dust.

2. Use a cotton rag soaked with oil to wipe down the outside of the didj. You should apply it evenly and lightly.

3. Allow to dry for about 10 minutes and then wipe off excess.

Place oily rags in a bucket filled with water. Remove rags and clean thoroughly. It is important not to skip this final step because the oily rags are self-combustible. It also enables you to re-use the rags the next time. You can also discard the used rag by placing in a sealed container filled with water in the trash.

TO APPLY OIL TO THE INSIDE OF YOUR DIDJERIDU:

You will need oil, a small funnel, 2 sheets of plastic (like a grocery bag), 2 rubber bands, cotton rags, two buckets, and some water. Take off the wax mouthpiece before you begin.

1. Take a sheet of plastic and secure it onto one end of your didjeridu with a rubber band. Turn the didj over and pour about 1 cup of oil into the didj using the funnel.

2. Cap off that end of the didj with the other sheet of plastic and rubber band.

3. Turn the didj parallel to the floor. Rotate and shake the didj in all directions coating all the inside surfaces with oil.

4. After a couple of minutes of shaking, take off the plastic on one end and turn it over to pour the excess oil into the bucket. Take off the other piece of plastic. Oil inevitably gets on the outside of the didj in places. For this reason, it is a good idea to wipe down the outside to form an even layer of oil on all the surfaces. This should be a thin coat as described above, in "To Apply Oil to the Outside of Your Didj".

5. Wipe off excess oil on the outside after 10 minutes.

6. Allow the didj to dry standing or leaning up on something for two days. Oil will still drain a little during this time so put it in a good place on top of something that can catch the oil.

HOW TO REPLACE YOUR MOUTHPIECE:

The mouthpiece is very important for the full enjoyment of your didjeridu. There are some didjeridus that have a natural wood mouthpiece, while others have bees wax. It is a good idea to experiment with the size of your mouthpiece until you find what works for you. Different playing styles along with different sizes of mouths and lips will all have an impact on the size of your mouthpiece. The smallest change might make a huge difference in ease of playing and tone. Do not be afraid to experiment with the size of the mouthpiece, you will eventually find the sweet spot for you.

1. To replace your bees wax mouthpiece you should soften a piece of wax in the sun, under a lamp, or with warm to hot water. We find that the sun or a hot lamp work the best.

2. When plyable, rip off a plum-sized lump and roll it between your palms. Work it into a snake long enough to wrap it around the mouthpiece on your didjeridu one time. The amount of wax and the size of the snake you roll will depend on how big the inside bore is on your instrument.

3. Gently press the wax snake onto the inside and the outside of the tube making sure it seals against the wood.

4. Form a smooth round or oval cap and shape it into a suitable size for your lips.

5. Make sure the top of the mouthpiece you just made is flat, not wavy. This makes a big difference in the seal you can get.

6. You can further enhance the look and strength of your mouthpiece by dipping it into a pot of wax that is melted in a double boiler.
